Repairs strengthen Howard Hanson Dam, reduce risk of floods Lt. Col. James Rollins, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deputy District Commander, briefed our Committee of the Whole September 1 on the repairs taking place to strengthen the federally owned and operated Howard Hanson Dam and prepare it for winter weather.
Lt. Col. Rollins informed the Committee that after testing, it appears the grout curtain put in place last winter has reduced seepage of water through an earthen structure next to the dam. The grout curtain has reduced the risk from 1-in-4 to 1-in-60 the need to release water from behind the dam to relieve pressure on the structure, water which could cause flooding within the Green River Valley. Additional repairs, which are targeted for completion in 2012, are expected to further reduce the risk of flooding.
