CASE UPDATES: June 2010

Greenlake Robber Sent to Prison:  State v. Gibbs:  Defendant Jarvis Gibbs was convicted of two counts of First Degree Robbery and one count of Second Degree Identity Theft for his role in a series of robberies that took place in the Greenlake, Magnolia, and Capital Hill neighborhoods last year.  Gibbs, along with two co-defendants, Clovelle Harvey and Sheena Blackburn, robbed several victims of their wallets, i-Pods and cell phones.  As accomplices, both Harvey and Blackburn pleaded guilty and later testified at Gibbs' trial.  Gibbs was sentenced to over five and a half years in prison.  Senior DPA Steve Kim handled the prosecution of this case.

Child Sexual Abuse:  State v. Jones:  Defendant Joseph Jones was convicted of Rape of a Child in the First Degree -- Domestic Violence for sexually abusing an eight-year-old in 2005.  On June 4, the defendant was sentenced to a minimum term of eight years and up to a maximum term of life in prison.  DPA Terry Carlstrom handled the prosecution of this case.

Defendant Pleads Guilty in Pacific Community Center Shooting:  State v. Kim:  After the conclusion of several pre-trial motions, defendant Sopheatheara Kim pleaded guilty to First Degree Murder with a Firearm Enhancement for the shooting death of 21-year-old Shiloh Drott on November 14, 2008 when he fired a handgun into the Pacific Community Center.  The defendant fired into the building because he felt he had been disrespected by some individuals attending the church function being held in the Center that day.  The defendant now faces a potential term of 25-31 years in prison when he is sentenced.  Senior DPA Cheryl Snow and DPA Jennifer Worley handled the prosecution of this case.

Abusive Father Found Guilty:  State v. Orozco:  Defendant Marcus Orozco-Zamudio was convicted of two counts of Third Degree Rape of a Child and one count of violating a court-imposed no contact order for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl over the course of several years.  The defendant now faces several years in prison when he is sentenced on June 11 in Judge White's courtroom at the Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC) in Kent.  DPA Ben Santos handled the prosecution of this case.
